solar power

Besides a couple of energy sources yet to be tamed to any significant degree – geothermal and wave motion – solar power is, really, the source of virtually all energy on earth. Fossil fuels derive from the breakdown of carbon-based life forms on earth – those carbon entities grew thanks to the heat and light of the sun. Fossil fuels are stored solar energy. Wind energy derives from the heating of the atmosphere, again by the sun. hydro power comes from water deposited at higher elevations than others – true, gravity is what makes it possible to get energy from that water, but the water got there from rain, and that came from the heat of the sun. deriving energy directly from the sun seems to me the most efficient path possible. cut out the middlemen. ironically, the current technologies for deriving energy directly from the sun tend to be highly *inefficient*. Typical photovoltiac panels are only about 15% efficient at converting light from the sun into electrons. Using the heat of the sun can be fairly efficient – but – other than preheating the water that goes into a home’s water heater – the mechanisms necessary for generating electricity from the sun’s heat tend to be too costly or complex to get into widespread use.
