Energy Meter
The British Government has just recently announced its plans to install smart energy meters in every home in the UK by the end of the next decade. The meters that monitor energy consumption on a regular basis will prove to be a revolutionary change to the energy industry for a number of reasons.
The meters key attribute is that it communicates energy consumption from a house directly to the supplier saving the consumer and supplier a considerable amount of time and cost. From the suppliers point of view the cost of resources will fall considerably as they will no longer need to employ staff to visit each and every home to collect meter readings and will be able to reduce the amount of staff employed in call centres as there will be less if any bill queries and customers phoning in with their meter readings. From the consumers perspective there will hopefully be less error in the amount billed for energy supplies meaning that no consumers will be over charged for their energy consumption. Also, consumers will no longer have to spend endless hours and funds on making phone calls to resolve cost queries and correct meter readings. However, as with everything good there is a down side, which will be that the initial cost of installing the smart meters will be passed on by energy suppliers to the consumer. Once the government enforces this plan the cost of installing the meters for the suppliers will be given to consumers via their energy prices which are likely to increase during this time.
Although initially energy prices may increase slightly in the long run the new smart meters should see gas and electricity prices fall as the energy industry become more efficient and cost effective.

what is the highest percentage % that an energy company can recover for debts when a token meter is installed?
i have never used one of these contraptions before, but the first few times ive put £10 from a card into it, its taken about £7 in debts and left me with £3 to use.
theres no way i can afford to keep feeding the meter at that rate
is it legal what the supplier is doing?
You seem to be missing the point in that YOU do owe THEM money. How much is owed, and how long will it take to repay?
You may be able to get CAB to intervene to reduce the clawback, but you would have to demonstrate that you are managing your debts and not just wanting that extra spending money for non-essentials.
