Energy Efficient

What happened to the energy efficient home? I read the best definition of an energy efficient home by Dennis Crook. He built houses as energy efficient the Carter Administration in the 1980s. His definition of an energy efficient home follows:
Energy Efficiency works at home as a machine operation in which the equipment produces as much, if not more energy capacity than needed to operate the ideal human environment, including air quality, moisture conditions, temperature and lighting. The ideal energy-efficient home retains the best environment for human habitation, minimizing the cost of energy. "

Thank you for this simple explanation! I finally understand what a home is energy efficient.
But what I can not, then, is that building green means?
I hear people suggest grass growing on my roof. I do not need a flat roof? Heard roofs need repairs more often, once every ten years. This is more than pitched roofs. Where do I put the soil when it needs repaired? When it needs mowed as does the engine get on the roof? I already have enough to cut grass.
There will be a greater weight in the construction of soil and moisture rain? I would be concerned with the formation of fungi, damp soil.
I certainly do not want my walls made of straw bail. What will occurs if a tiny hole in the wall? That would be a great place for nesting of rodents. What happens if there is a flash in the pan immediately spark right?
Has anyone really thought through the concept of "green building"? Or was the term developed as a marketing trick to sell products? I think I'll stay with my home being energy efficient. At least I understand what it means and will not have to rebuild my house. Energy efficiency is a series of changes you can make in your home to make more efficient, then what is currently working on.
