Elusive Cold Fusion
Cold Fusion created quite a stir many years ago, when a couple of researchers - Fleischmann and Pons – claimed that they had achieved fusion at room temperature. I won’t go into the detailed history of that event or that time, suffice to say that the results were not unambiguously repeatable – nor could they be conclusively denied. The upshot however was that the notion was widely discredited in the scientific community, and was the target of much ridicule and derision (which, sadly, play no role in the empirical method, and speaks to the biases we all harbor, regardless of whether we are scientists or laymen).
There has been ongoing research into Cold Fusion since then, though funding is hard to come by. There have been some interesting results over the years that continue to suggest that cold fusion may not be anomalous, and that the secret of doing so may yet be unlocked.
